Description
These mating Crane Flies, Tipulidae oleracea, are on a Thuja tree in northern California, about five feet from the ground. The close-up photo shows the female at the top, her abdomen distended with eggs that the male is in the process of fertilizing. The pointy object sticking out at the bottom left side of her abdomen is an ovipositor via which she will lay her eggs in moist soil such as a lawn.
The bodies of these Crane Flies are about 1-1/2 inches long. Their lives are short, usually lasting just a few days.
Crane flies do NOT bite people. Unfortunately, despite common belief, they are also not "mosquito hawks" since they do not eat mosquitoes.
