Description
A dragonfly was sunning itself on a garden post when it suddenly flew away, returning in seconds with a good-size black insect in its mouth. It slowly chewed its meal, as though enjoying it immensely, and completely devoured it in less than a minute. It then flew off close to my head - as if to tell me "I know you're watching me!" - and returned to the post with another insect in its mouth! Amazing little critters!
Belonging to the insect order Odonata (meaning "toothed ones"), dragonflies have a tooth-like serrated jaw and a near-360-degree vision field, making them successful hunters of insects such as mosquitoes.
The orange-hued dragonfly in this photo is a type of the Meadowhawk species. Other dragonfly species have blue, brown, black or multiple colors in their bodies and wings. According to scientists, dragonflies have been on this planet for about 300 million years.
