Description
A dragonfly appears to be smiling while stretching its body and holding on to a garden post on a sunny afternoon.
Belonging to the insect order Odonata (meaning "toothed ones"), dragonflies have a tooth-like serrated jaw and a near-360-degree vision field, making them successful hunters of insects such as mosquitoes.
The orange-hued dragonfly in this photo is a type of the Meadowhawk species. Other dragonfly species have blue, brown, black or multiple colors in their bodies and wings. According to scientists, dragonflies have been on this planet for about 300 million years.
